Abstract
Background and Objectives: Ossicular reconstruction technique continues to pose of challenge to otolaryngologists. The purpose of this study was to investigate a middle ear condition, surgical method and material for optimal hearing gain in the ossiculoplasty.

Materials and Methods: One hundred and three cases of ossiculoplasty in patients suffering from chronic otitis media at the Keimyung university Dongsan hospital from January 1990 to December 2003 were included in this retrospective study. The degree of hearing improvement was analised by deviding into a case of post operative air-bone gapE30 dB and a case of post operative air-bone gapE20 dB. The degree of hearing improvement was analised according to the method of operation, prosthesis and pre operative middle ear mucosa condition.

Results: Of the total 103 cases, 64 (62.1%) cases were(30 dB ABG and 34 (33.0%) cases were(20 dB ABG. Although there was no statistical difference, the hearing results were good for the cases containing superstructure, the Polycel¢ç and PORP method were used.

Conclusion: The result of this study suggested that Polycel¢ç is more suitable material in ossiculoplasty and the presence of stapes super structure, and the usage of PORP method in ossiculoplasty are better prognostic factors with no statistical difference in hearing improvement.
